Dropped
On closer inspection, React Native works through a whole deck of intermediaries, drags along a complicated harness, and is very temperamental — its multi-platform story turned out to be questionable. With Electron, we hauled our React components over with far less effort and stood up an app that launched on almost any OS without any ritual dances.
After the research, React Native is dropped — desktop clients ride on Electron.
Assessing
We're looking at React Native as an alternative to Electron in our search for a platform to escape UWP/WinJS. The bet is that our well-established React stack ports nicely to this platform. We've put together an experimental build and are testing its "cross-platform-ness".
